The Alarmists

If you’ve never heard of The Alarmists, now is a good time to check them out. This Minneapolis-based band is one of the premiere Indie Rock bands on an ever-growing Indie scene in Minneapolis, setting the bar high for any up-and-coming musicians in their genre. They have played more shows than I care to attempt to count and have been a crowd favorite at many midwestern colleges.

Everything appeared to be going well for this band. And by using the word, “appeared,” I meant that everything was going well for them. They were touring and playing shows constantly, leaving little time for the band members to have other jobs or any type of life not based on the road. They started playing their music just at the right time to have it noticed by the rock-loving public. Honestly- this band had everything going for them.

And then a few months ago I check back in to see if they have any shows coming up. Nothing. I knew that they were planning on an album release in the near future, so I did not think anything of it. Writing and recording take a lot of time and energy and often a band will take off a month or so to do this (case in point, Camera Can’t Lie). But when I went back to their website a few days ago and still saw no concerts, I started to worry, so I wrote to them.

Luckily, my fears were calmed as I found out that The Alarmists are going to be back on the scene very soon (meaning within the next few months). Here’s what they said in regards to their extended leave from the scene and soon return:

“We’ve been working on the new album for quite a while now, and during the process, we had a line up change. We thought it best to focus our efforts on the album to make it the best we could. It’s been really rewarding to have some time off, and after 3 or 4 years of playing shows almost non-stop, having a few months off has been nice too!

At any rate, the new album will be done and released June 9th, and the CD release show is at the Varsity on June 12th.”

So, everyone, Varsity Theatre on June 12th. I have a feeling that this will be a cd that you will want to buy and listen to over and over again.

Sleep Whale (mom) and more

I don’t really understand this band and I’m not sure if their name is “Sleep Whale (mom)” or not, but I like them anyway, whatever they are. I may try to contact them this week just because their music is so intensely relaxing.

Favorite track on their myspace? ”Josh Likes Me.” Just a great acoustic song by a band with a funny name.

Confused about the name? I was too, until my roommate explained it. Say it slow and in a Texan accent.

Getting started…

Many of you are probably wondering why you came to this site in the first place.

Well, following the advice a friend gave me last fall, I have decided to start a blog dedicated completely to music in all its glory. While many posts in this blog will follow the Minneapolis music scene, some of it will also contain information on national bands as well as just random music tidbits. A conglomeration of resources for you to check out to keep tabs on the music world.

I will always love suggestions, including ideas about bands to interview/review/feature, concerts to post about, etc… so feel free to comment on this or shoot me an e-mail at rag.bagger@hotmail.com
